Fewer Clicks, Same Customers? What Google's AI Answers Mean for Your Website
More people now get their answer from Google's AI or ChatGPT without clicking a single website. Should you worry? Here's what it really means for your business, and what to do about it.
Someone in Port Harcourt needs a cake vendor. Five years ago, they typed "cake vendor Port Harcourt" into Google and opened three or four websites. Today, they ask: "Who is a good cake vendor in Port Harcourt for a wedding cake for 100 guests?" Google's AI or ChatGPT answers in a paragraph, and many people never click anything.
If your website visits feel lower lately, this may be part of why. Here's what's changing, why it's not all bad news, and what to do.
This post in one minute
- People now ask questions and get the answer without clicking
- Fewer visits doesn't have to mean fewer customers
- Count enquiries, not visits
How people search now
- They ask full questions, the way they'd ask a friend.
- Google often writes the answer itself, at the top of the page.
- ChatGPT and other AI tools give a short answer with a few business names.
The result is fewer clicks. When Pew Research tracked real Google users, people clicked a website on 8% of searches that showed an AI summary, compared with 15% when there was none (Pew Research Center, 2025).
Fewer visits isn't always bad news
The visits you lose are mostly people with quick questions, like "what time does the market open?" They were never going to buy.
The people who still click after reading an AI answer have usually done their comparing already. They come to check your prices, see your work, or send a message. Fewer visitors, but more of them ready to buy.
Count enquiries, not visits
Website visits were always a rough guide. What pays the bills is people getting in touch. Track these instead:
- WhatsApp messages and calls from your website
- Contact form submissions and bookings
- Answers to "How did you hear about us?" Add "ChatGPT or AI" as an option.
If enquiries are steady or rising, your website is doing its job, whatever the visit numbers say.
Answer buying questions
AI answers general questions on its own, so it doesn't need to send anyone to you. Buying questions are different: they need a real business.
- "How much does [your service] cost in Port Harcourt?"
- "Who delivers to [your area]?"
- "How long does [your service] take?"
Put clear answers to these on your website: price ranges, areas you cover, how long things take. That's what gets you named, and clicked. Not sure where you stand? Run our 10-minute test.
Make it easy to act
When a ready-to-buy visitor lands on your site, don't lose them.
- A WhatsApp button they can't miss
- A site that loads fast on mobile data
- An instant reply, even at night. An AI agent can answer questions and take bookings while you sleep.

Frequently asked questions
Is AI reducing traffic to my website?
It can. When Google or ChatGPT answers a question directly, fewer people click through. Most of the clicks lost are quick questions, not buyers, so watch your enquiries rather than your visits.
Should I still invest in a website if people use AI?
Yes. AI tools build their answers from what they find on websites. Your website is where AI learns about your business, and where ready-to-buy customers go to check you out.
How do I know if customers found me through ChatGPT?
Ask them. Add "ChatGPT or AI" to your "How did you hear about us?" question on forms and in conversations. Website analytics can't always tell you.
What should my website focus on now?
Clear answers to buying questions: what you offer, price ranges, areas you cover and how long things take, plus an easy way to contact you on WhatsApp or by phone.
The bottom line
Search is changing, but customers still need businesses. Fewer people may visit your website, but the ones who do are closer to buying. Answer their buying questions, make it easy to reach you, and count enquiries, not visits. New to this? Start with What Is AEO?
